Introduction

You and your family are going to live in Spain for a year. You need to find out as much as you can about life in that country, so that you can fit in. What kind of things do you think you should learn about?

Use this worksheet to write what you think you know about Spain, and what you want to know.

As you work to find the answers to some questions, you can write them  here . You can also write them in the boxes after each question and send them to your teacher.

What makes you different or similar to kids in Spain?

The Activities

 Los niños españoles: ¿son diferentes?

Click on the underlined words above and you will find pictures of Spanish children. After looking at the pictures, write two or three sentences about how they look and if they are similar or different from you and your friends. Do NOT forget to sign your NAME to all your messages if you choose to answer on the screen. When you finish, click the submit button.

¿Dónde está España?

To find Spain you can look at these different sites:

 World atlas

Maps of the world

Now answer these questions:

1. ¿En qué continente está España?

2. ¿Está España al norte, sur, este u oeste de los Estados Unidos?

3. ¿Qué país está al norte de España?

4. ¿Qué país está al oeste de España?

5. ¿Qué océano separa Norte América de España?

6. ¿Cuál es la capital de España?

Type your answers in here:

¿Qué idioma hablan en España?

Is there more than one official language? Look at these sites to find the answers (remember to scan the webpage until you see the subject you are looking for):

 Cool planet

 Cyberspain

 Comida

You can visit these 2 sites to answer the questions below. It will help you if you take a few notes about what you read in this worksheet. Don’t forget to scroll and scan!

Virtual journey

Grolier on line

Spanish food

1.       What kind of foods do they eat?

2.     Name one famous Spanish dish.

3.     What is the most important meal of the day?

4.     What time do they eat lunch?

5.     What time do they eat dinner?

¿A qué hora van a la escuela?

Before you look for information, you need to find the meaning of these Spanish words: horario, mañana, tarde. To do that, you can go to this translation website, or use a Spanish-English dictionary. Remember what we learned about scrolling and scanning for the important words.

Now look at the websites of several schools in different cities in Spain:

A school in the south of Spain

A school in Madrid.

Another school in Madrid.

1. What is their schedule? Write down the times.

2. Does it change in the summer?

3. Is it different or similar to yours?

 Ciudades de España.

Choose two of the cities or towns below (don't forget to write the name of the towns you choose).

Cordoba

Avila

Chinchon

Segovia

Santiago de Compostela

1. Describe the 2 photos you chose.

2. Think about where you live or cities you know in your country. What is different from the pictures you just described?

 Arte

Look at this painting. Do you think it was painted by a Spanish kid or a grown-up?

Can you find out who painted it? To help you, you have the names of three Spanish painters below. You will look at different works by these 3 painters and try to identify the style.

Picasso

Joan Miro

Salvador Dali

Now type the name of the painter in the box.

What makes you different?

Have you found out anything about differences and similarities? In a group of three you are going to talk about what you discovered and then write a short play (it doesn't have to be longer than 3-5 minutes). You can choose a situation that has to do with the food, language, geography, etc. for your play.

Here is the situation:

A kid from the States has just arrived in Spain, and he/she meets a Spanish kid. One of you will be the narrator, one will be an American kid, and the other one will be a Spanish kid. The American speaks a little bit of Spanish (like you), and the Spaniard speaks a little bit of English.

Conclusion

After finishing this project, you will know a little bit more about how children from a different country live. Write about the main difference/s with the way you live.

Thinking about what we have learned in the Spanish class about Spanish-speaking countries, do you think kids in Mexico have the same customs as kids in Spain? Why or why not?
